Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral commissions play a pivotal role in ensuring the transparency and credibility of electoral processes. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nigeria is responsible for organizing elections, ensuring the integrity of the process, and enhancing voter confidence through transparent practices. In Gombe LGA, Gombe State, INEC’s efforts in promoting free, fair, and transparent elections are critical to the democratic process. These activities include voter education, registration, monitoring, and the announcement of election results, all of which serve to reduce electoral fraud and manipulation (Ibrahim & Yusuff, 2023). By examining the activities of INEC in this region, this study seeks to assess the extent to which electoral commissions contribute to electoral transparency, particularly in relation to public trust and confidence in the system.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While INEC has made significant strides in improving electoral transparency, challenges remain in Gombe LGA. Issues such as voter apathy, insufficient electoral awareness, and the influence of political elites on the electoral process continue to undermine the commission's efforts. This study aims to investigate the role of INEC in promoting transparency in Gombe LGA, exploring the effectiveness of their activities and identifying areas where improvement is needed to enhance public confidence and electoral integrity.
